Suellen Lassetter
Director, Young @ Heart Tappers
Suellen began dancing at age 3. For the next 15 years she studied all forms of dance at the Widman School of Dance in Beaumont, TX. While working on her Bachelor’s Degree in Education at the University of North Texas, she continued her study of dance including ballet, tap, modern, social dance, folk dance, and square dancing. While teaching 8th grade English in Lewisville, TX, she resumed her ballet training and began teaching classes at the Lez Damaroff School of Ballet during a summer break. In 1976, she purchased the small dance studio that became the Lewisville Dance Academy. Over the next 20 years, under her direction, LDA grew to over 400 students dancing in a 6000 sq.ft. facility. In addition to teaching class and managing the dance studio, she continued her dance training with J. David Kirby in Dallas and performed in several shows at the Dallas Convention Center. She also served as Artistic Director of the Lewisville Dance Ensemble, a not-for-profit dance company based at LDA, which performed full-length ballets, contemporary works, and competed in several national competitions bringing home many 1st place trophies. She also served on the Arts Council for the Lewisville Chamber of Commerce and choreographer for the Poco Mas Players, a local theater group. After closing LDA, she continued teaching at the Ballet Academy of Texas until moving to Hong Kong in 1998 where she taught tap classes for the American Women’s Association. In 2007, she joined the Young @ Heart Tappers, then under the direction of founder Louise Pewsey. In 2013, Suellen became director when Louise passed away at age 87.
